Painting: Girl Waiting at the Table

Part of a series of paintings completed in Malaga, Spain, ''Girl Waiting at the Table'' shows David Farrant''s skill in the depiction of figures in a story. He finds inspiration in everyday scenes of human interaction, here a young girl and a waiter. Both figures are seen from the back and are oblivious to the artist''s gaze. They are portrayed against a background of muted colours and complex shadows using light and shade to create a modern fresh feel.

Talking about his art works David says: ''I like to think my paintings work on two levels - firstly, and in a formal sense, as compositions in which strong tonal contrast, accents of colour and simplification of form are key elements. Secondly, and in a narrative sense, I hope they carry a mood and the possibility of an unfinished story which the viewer can share".

David Farrant is recognised as one of the finest portrait painters in the country. He has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery where he was a finalist in the John Player Award for Portraiture 1989, and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in the Mall Galleries, London. David Farrant now prefers to concentrate on figurative painting.
