Painting: Three Ferns

''Three Ferns'' is in a series of semi abstract paintings that use a monochrome palette to explore tone, texture and impression. The contrast between the black and white in the painting is striking. Talking about her art work Jane Lion says: "Light and weather influence whether my paintings become abstract or representational. I love colour. I paint how I have seen things on the day stretching a small pallet by experimenting with colour tones and values and building with layers of glazes and textured matt surfaces to create depth and contrast."

Using both oil and acrylic Jane Lion creates imaginative modern art works. Much of Jane Lion''s life was spent on and by the sea and this has influenced the colour palette of her paintings and, perhaps, the misty, atmospheric appearance of some of her paintings.
