Richard Adams was born in Hampshire in 1960. He spent his early years in Wiltshire, and later studied illustration at Leicester Polytechnic. After graduating he moved to London and worked as a freelance illustrator for several years on behalf of clients as diverse as the Radio Times, Penguin Books and BP.

During the 1980's Richard Adams won many awards for his illustration art work. However he became frustrated by the confines of a brief and decided to retired from illustration to begin exhibiting his art work in the 1990's.

Adams now lives in Sussex and the port of Rye and the Sussex countryside feature heavily in his modern art as does the Cornish coast and the Cotswolds which is an area he recalls from his childhood. Recent time spent in Devon has encouraged the introduction of the Devon countryside into his paintings. Richard's modern art work continues to be inspired by his long-held loves for English vernacular architecture, British history and our native flora and fauna.

However the true subject of Richard Adams' art work is the imagination. Through his flights of fancy Adams carries the viewer into an unreal world of colourful characters in simple, domestic and rural pursuits. Whilst he embraces the supernatural or darker side of life in his detail-rich narratives his view is ultimately optimistic and life-affirming. Likened to the eccentric visionaries, Spencer and Dadd his art work follows in a tradition of British image making which he refreshes with his unique wit and subtle humour.
